“Meet Chad Akers, the visionary President behind Hungry Lambs! With his leadership, we’ve formed incredible partnerships with groups like the Southwestern Regional Day Report Center and the Fresh Start Program. Chad’s passion for community empowerment led us to establish a hydroponic greenhouse and a top-notch commercial kitchen for training aspiring chefs and offering exciting cooking classes. We hold distributions twice a month. Typically on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of every month. Sometimes scheduling issues may occur so please check our event calendar or Facebook page for updates.
The name of the charity is Hungry Lambs Food Initiative. The 501c3 was established approximately 30 years ago by Linda Akers and Linda Marsh. It began as a small pantry ran out of the First Presbyterian Church of Logan and served a few families each month. The pantry grew substantially over the years with the declining economy of the region and the opioid epidemic that plagues the county. In 2020, the volunteers of the pantry could not commit to serving families due to the pandemic. At that time, the pantry shifted its efforts to become a drive through pantry and was organized and ran by Chad Akers and the Fresh Start Program. Fresh Start is a federally funded substance use disorder recovery program. Participants in the program raise and harvest vegetables, participate in community outreach, and receive treatment and support. The vegetables grown through Fresh Start are donated to the Hungry Lambs Food Initiative to provide fresh vegetables to those in need. During the pandemic, the Fresh Start participants volunteered their time to ensure that food was packaged and distributed. It was also in 2020 that Hungry Lambs experienced a substantial increase in families served. In 2020 and 2021, Hungry Lambs formed several partnerships to try to meet the demands of food insecurity.
